Seeds for Hope is a Mitchell’s Shade scholarship program for Oklahoma City students. Under the direction of Mitchell’s Shade, Seeds for Hope awards scholarships to 3rd through 8th grade students enrolled in Title I schools in Oklahoma City.
In addition, Kindergarten through 2nd grade students can participate for a chance to receive a Tree-Growing Kit for their school. If a school has 10 or more entries into the Kindergarten—2nd grade division, that school will receive three free trees at Mitchell’s Shade Community Tree Giveaway.
Seeds for Hope will kick off this
Fall at John Rex Charter School.
Applicants will be divided into four
divisions based on grade:
• Kindergarten – 2nd Grade
• 3rd – 4th Grade
• 5th – 6th Grade
• 7th – 8th Grade
The K - 2nd-grade division will
have up to 3 winners, and all other
divisions will have 1 to 2 winners
and an opportunity to apply for a
scholarship with Mitchell’s Shade.
Participants will submit an art piece
accompanied by a creative writing
essay to apply. Applicants will be
asked to create an artwork of a tree
and write a story about the tree’s
significance to the participant’s love
of nature or to honor an important
person or memory.
Applicants can work in pairs to
submit one art piece and one essay.
If awarded a scholarship, it will be
split between the pair.
Entries will be accepted until
February 14th, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
The Mitchell’s Shade committee will
judge all entries, and the winners
will be announced in April at the
Mitchell’s Shade Tree Giveaway at
Scissortail Park.
All K – 2nd-grade winners will
receive a Tree-Growing Kit and an
end-of-year pizza party for their class.
All 3rd – 8th-grade participants,
regardless of the results of the
art and writing competition, will
have the opportunity to apply for a
scholarship from Mitchell’s Shade
during their senior year of high
school. However, winners of the
art and writing competition will be
strongly considered.
Each winning recipient can access
this scholarship after graduating
high school. These scholarships can
provide as much as $6,000 or more
in educational support. The money
will be sent directly to the college,
junior college, or career tech of
their choice for tuition and other
school expenses.
It must be applied for in the
student’s senior year and claimed
within one year of graduation.

All submissions will be picked up at this time. Participants will submit an art piece accompanied by a creative writing essay to apply. Applicants will be asked to create an artwork of a tree and write a story about the tree’s significance to the participant’s love of nature or to honor an important person or memory.
Applicants can work in pairs to submit one art piece and one essay. If awarded a scholarship, it will be split between the pair.
Participants will be provided with an entry form and paper for both the artwork and the essay. Submissions that do not use the provided paper will not be considered.
The art must cover the entire paper, and the drawing must be in color. Essays should be between 150-200 words. Black ink only.
Participants in the Kindergarten – 2nd Grade division may write a sentence or sentences, but the student must handwrite all written submissions in each of the four divisions.
Markers, watercolors, colored pencils, crayons, colored pens, acrylic or oil paint.
NO CHALK, NO SKETCHES, NO MIXED
MEDIA; ART MUST BE TWO- DIMENSIONAL AND
IN COLOR.
DISCLAIMERS
Participants are responsible for keeping in contact with the Mitchell’s Shade organization via our website portal. During his or her senior year of high school, scholarship applicants will be directed to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation Scholarship application site to apply. If selected, the funds will be directly deposited in the student’s name to the university or trade school where they have enrolled. In the event the child is unable to attend college, the funds will remain in the Mitchell’s
Shade Scholarship fund to provide further scholarships.
All submissions are the property of Mitchell’s Shade. Any proceeds from the sale of any of the art or writings are the sole property of Mitchell’s Shade and can be used to further the mission or support any programs now or in the future.
All submissions will be displayed at the Mitchell’s Shade Tree Giveaway at Scissortail Park in April 2025.
